Freqently Asked Questions

Are all sites compatible with Winston?
Most websites and mobile apps run perfectly fine with Winston and may even work better than before. However some sites bake tracking scripts into their core functionality and have reduced functionality or break. For instance, embedded Tweets will no longer display in articles because this functionality leaks your personal data to Twitter. In these cases, you can choose to whitelist the site and re-enable full functionality or leave it like it is. The point is that the choice is now yours.
How many devices can I use with Winston?
A single Winston can be used to protect every device connected to your network. If you have dozens of different internet connected devices (PCs, tablets, smartphones, Amazon Echos, smart TVs, Rokus, or anything else), they are all protected by the same Winston.
What is the maximum connection speed?
Winston supports up to 1GB/sec bandwidth, well in excess of what most ISPs provide. If your ISP is slower, you will be limited by their connection speed. Winston's performance will also be affected by the number of devices and applications actively running on a network. It's designed to easily handle a workload of a typical home network with multiple laptops, phones, tablets and smart devices. Please note that we recommend a minimum 3Mbps upload speed in order to use the Winston Privacy Mesh network.
Does Winston log my internet activity?
Winston does not log any internet activity which goes over our network. In fact, we designed our technology specifically so that we cannot ever see or decrypt your internet activity (similar to Telegraph and Signal). Your internet activity is retained on your local Winston device for up to seven days so that you can see what sites attempted to track you. This information is stored only on your device and is never exposed to us or the internet. You can disable this functionality in the "Advanced Settings" section of your local Winston website (http://winston.conf). Please note that if you do so, you will not be able to view any activity occurring on your local network.
What do I get with monthly service?
Your Winston device comes with one year (12 months) of free service. This includes daily updates to our anti-tracking and antimalware database, encrypted DNS, unlimited cloaked bandwidth and software updates. After one year, the Winston service renews at $8.25 per month. If your monthly service lapses, anonymization and updates will automatically terminate. Your device will continue to function but at a reduced level of functionality.
what network setups are compatible with winston?
Winston currently requires you to have a separate cable modem and wireless router and connects to both with standard Ethernet cables. Winston sits outside of your wireless router, which allows it to effectively monitor all devices on your home network. We do not currently support "All-in-one" cable modem + wifi routers but it is theoretically possible. If you have networking expertise and are interested in testing this, please contact us.
